Windows 8 Preview – Still trying to install it.

This will be a short post.

I downloaded the Windows 8 Preview ISO, but still haven’t been able to install it yet.

I only have three computers capable of running it and I don’t want to trash the Windows 7 install, just to install Windows 8. So what do I do ?

Virtual Box was the perfect solution, so I installed it on two different computers (only ones with 2 gig ram) and tried installing Windows 8 to a VM. Failed !!!

It turns out the computers CPU must support VT (Virtualization Technology) for Windows 8 to work in Virtual Box. Mine did not.

So now I am in the process of trying to find the cheapest way to upgrade my computers so at least one of them will be able to run Windows 8, preferably in a VM. I purchased new RAM for my Windows Vista Home Basic computer. I am upgrading it from 512 meg ram to 2 gig. The problem with this PC is that the CPU does not support VT, so I may have to purchase a cheap harddrive and then swap out the old drive (saves my Vista install) with another and then do a clean install of Windows 8. I am also looking for a cheap CPU replacement for the PC which supports Virtualization Technology, so I can just install Windows 8 into a VM.

Now I have an Acer Netbook and amazingly, it turns out to have a CPU which does support VT. It has a dual core Atom N570 CPU. Nice CPU !!! But the Netbook only has 1 gig memory and while I can get 2 gig cheap, its a pain to install it. I watched a video on Youtube about installing memory in this Netbook and you have to remove the keyboard (3 clips hold it in place) and about 5 or 6 screws and then the entire back side of the computer, just to install the memory. Not for the “faint of heart”. I just paid about $250 for this Netbook and I sure would hate to trash it while trying to install memory.

So, no Windows 8 yet ! I will post more later, after I try some of the solutions I mentioned. I really want to get my hands on Windows 8 and test out my EZGUI 5.0 software on it.
